BPIF – Walmley welcomes labels golf day

(Left to right): The winners of the 1st Team Prize: Ian Woodhead, Paul Macdonald, Kevin McKell, and NWT editor Nick Coombes (139 points)

UK • June 22nd saw an enthusiastic band of 24 golfers from the UK label industry gather at Walmley Golf Club, the parkland course in the West Midlands, for the BPIF Labels’ Summer Golf Meeting. The course was in fine condition with the greens running fast and the rough not too testing – at least not as much as the trees!

BPIF Labels’ Chairman John Bambery reminded those taking part of the long association that Walmley has with the industry dating back to the late 1980s when Edlon Machinery, then Gallus and subsequently Comco agents, inaugurated a Label Golf Day for converters at the Club.

This year, despite threatening rain clouds in what has already been an unseasonably wet Summer (even by English standards), the sun eventually broke through and shone on some remarkable performances from those taking apart.

None more so than from Kevin McKell of Vetaphone, who posted a score of 40 Stableford points to win 1st prize from Mike Jackson (Prismm Environmental) with 39 points and Barry Lewis (Real Appeal) with 36.

The winning team was led by low handicapper Ian Woodhead of Anglia Labels, supported by Paul Macdonald of Mark Andy UK, Kevin McKell, and G&K’s own Editor-at-large Nick Coombes, who together managed to amass 129 points.

In the “Herma” ball competition, in which each player in the team uses a special ball for one hole in rotation until the ball is lost, the victors were BPIF Labels’ Chris Selby, Martin Fowler of Paragon Inks, Paul Ralph of Barcode Data, and appropriately, Paul Eggbeer of sponsors Herma UK.

There were prizes for “The Longest Drive”, won by Steve Jones of Lecta Paper, who hits the ball ‘a country mile’, and ‘Nearest the Pin’, won by Ian Woodhead on the fiendishly tricky par 3 closing hole.

Thanking the sponsors for their support and the Walmley Club for its hospitality, the Chairman reminded members of the autumn meeting on 20 October, which will be held at The Leicestershire Golf Club in memory of Bob Robinson, the former owner of Labelsco, a stalwart of the industry and keen golfer, who sadly passed away in 2008.  It’s hoped that all those who enjoyed “Uncle Bob’s” company both off and on the course will support the event and make it a day to remember.
