FINAT – Thinking at the leading edge at the European Label Forum

THE NETHERLANDS • The business challenges of today and tomorrow are the focus of the international label industry, where new brand owner demands, new technologies, legislation and new packaging formats combine to deliver an ever-changing platform of activity. This is the situation, which the agenda of the European Label Forum 2016 will address in an event dedicated to inspiring and energising label industry participants at all levels – with an outstanding programme of expert international speakers.

A changing world

The European Label Forum 2016 in Amsterdam, 16-18 June, opens with a keynote address from futurologist Magnus Lindkvist (SE), who combines the solid business reality of today with the imaginative storytelling of Hollywood to deliver a thought-provoking picture of how life’s broad disruptive change agenda will impact the label industry in the next ten years.

Debate with Rens de Jong

After FINAT Managing Director, Jules Lejeune, identifies current trends and developments in the industry highlighted in FINAT RADAR, it is the turn of Rens de Jong, host of Netherlands’ radio Business News talk show, founder of Buzzmaster, and entrepreneurial international moderator, to conduct the ELF 2016 Buzzmaster Debate’ with forum participants. Voted Quote magazine’s Moderator of the Year in 2013, he is expected to create a lively and valuable discussion that will, unusually, bring together the various branches of the complex label value chain in the same framework to express and address opportunities, concerns and opinions. The audience will have the opportunity to take part of the interactive discussion by asking questions via a so-called buzzmaster app on their smartphones.

The debate, on the second day of the Forum, will take place with the stakeholders from different corners of the European label business:

  • Didier Bonnefon, Sourcing & Supplier Development Manager Ingredients at Danone, Division Nutricia
  • Paul Earnshaw, Packaging Manager of Tesco
  • Rik Olthof, ‘brand strategist of Cartils (brand packaging design agency)
  • Keran Turakhia, Director of Hive (a UK company specialised in interactive packaging solutions)
  • Peder Michael Pruzan Jorgensen, Sustainability Executive of BSR
  • Corey Reardon, CEO AWA Alexander Watson Associates
  • Phil Allen (Value Creator at CVM€)
  • Gordon Crichton (Director of MAI)

The Label Masters Challenge with Mike Fairley

Where would the labels and packaging industry be without a skilled workforce that masters the sophisticated technology that it has at its disposal? How can we make sure that our industry is secured of a continuous inflow of a motivated talent? How can we establish a culture of permanent education to cope with the rapid changes in technology? And how can we create the necessary facilities to make this work? It all starts at the top. This industry has always excelled in entrepreneurship, technical excellence and innovation. Knowledge and technology awareness will remain key to future success. In collaboration with the Label Academy, FINAT is therefore challenging the leaders of this industry to test their competence in areas like printing technology, design and origination, dispensing and application, codes and coding, environmental sustainability and other modules from the series of 20 that are planned to encourage and support permanent education in the label industry. Delegates of the 2016 European Label Forum will compete in teams and after several rounds, the winner takes it all!!!

Test your technical know-how with the Label Masters Challenge!

On the second day of the European Label Forum, delegates will participate in the “Label Masters Challenge”. This team-based test is organised by Mike Fairley, founder-editor of Labels & Labeling magazine. Based on the currently-available modules of the Label Academy, Mike Fairley, assisted by FINAT programme committee chairman Niklas Olsson, will require teams to test their skills in four rounds of 20 questions – all of which will be designed to challenge players’ knowledge of the technicalities of their industry. The winning team, of course, will be declared Label Masters.

Post drupa review

Helpfully, the FINAT Label Forum agenda makes it possible for those delegates who did not attend drupa to be aware of the technology advances in their industry that were showcased in Düsseldorf. Herbert Knott, freelance correspondent for the German national label association VskE, has been specially commissioned by FINAT to walk the many halls, and report back to European Label Forum participants on relevant developments.

Lessons from the world of F1 racing

Mark Gallagher has worked in Formula One for almost 30 years and has spent the last 15 as a senior executive within the management of Jordan Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing and Cosworth. Today Mark heads a sports investment group, sits on the board of Status Grand Prix which he co-founded in 2005 and uses his vast experience of the F1 industry to work with teams, sponsors and drivers. He also makes regular appearances in the media, notably with Sky News and in 2012 is an expert pundit and commentator at F1 events with ESPN Star Sports, broadcasting to 24 countries and 36 million F1 fans in Asia.

Parallel business learning sessions

To accommodate both aspects of healthy business development, FINAT is hosting two interactive parallel workshops that will enable participants to gain new insights, tools, tips and skills that will help them and their business to enhance. We encourage business leaders to take advantage of this dual opportunity by bringing colleagues in charge of sales & marketing as well as product development. Phil Allen, CEO & Value Creator, Customer Value Management GmbH (CH) will talk about how to leverage customer value and to avoid the challenges of commoditization and improve current business profitability. Gordon Chrichton, Director of the Institut du Management de l’Achat International (F) will focus on the fact that, big-brand owners are increasingly turning to their strategic suppliers in creating new inroads. It is anticipated that up to 70% of innovation will come from suppliers in the next five years.

A lively, business-focussed event

All in all, the FINAT European Label Forum promises to be a lively, informative, and business-focused event for a key sector in today’s packaging industry, combining a strong formal agenda with a supplier tabletop exhibition and excellent networking across the complex label industry value chain.
